Editor’s Note:
During the Chile Final of the “China-Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — 2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge”, Professor Chen Taotao, Director of the Tsinghua University Latin America Center and Director of the Research Center for China-Latin America Management Studies at the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, gave an exclusive interview to Javier Pineda, Director of the Chilean national media outlet El Ciudadano. On 28 August, El Ciudadano published both Spanish- and English-language versions of the interview and released an English-language video through Canal Ciudadano. The discussion focused on Chinese investment and cooperation in Latin America, the Tsinghua “5W1H+” Poverty Alleviation Toolkit, and the role of universities and research institutions in strengthening China-Latin America relations.
Professor Chen emphasized that Chinese companies investing and cooperating in Latin America need not only solid capabilities in technology transfer and knowledge sharing, but also a deep understanding of host-country development strategies, business environments, and social needs. She noted that long-term trust can only be established through localized operations and a sustained commitment to social responsibility. Professor Chen further explained that the Tsinghua “5W1H+” Poverty Alleviation Toolkit provides a common analytical framework for comparing and learning from poverty alleviation experiences across different institutional contexts. By systematically examining poverty manifestations, causes, stakeholders, and action mechanisms, the toolkit supports mutual learning among countries facing different development challenges. Discussing the role of universities, Professor Chen stressed that academic and research institutions should focus on real-world problems, develop innovative methodologies, create collaborative platforms, and connect governments, businesses, and young people. By doing so, they can promote the implementation of projects with practical value and generate tangible benefits for communities in need.
