Currently, the Center has set up offices and teams within Tsinghua and in Chile to carry out multi-disciplinary and wide-ranging cooperation with Latin America. During 2020 and 2021, the Latin America Center, together with a number of Tsinghua faculties and institutions and local university partners in Chile, Peru and other Latin American countries, actively organized a number of international seminars on key topics such as the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Chile, the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Peru, public health policy, online education, the cultivation of students' global competence, addressing climate change, mechanisms of technology transfer, science, technology, and innovation, the dialogue between ancient civilizations and modern architecture, and interactive media technology.
During the period of 2022, the Center had actively linked and supported a number of Tsinghua faculties and institutions, including the School of Economics and Management, the School of Architecture, the School of Medicine, Technology Transfer Office, the Global Mooc and Online Education Alliance, the Center for Global Competency Development, the Language Center, the Institute of Public Safety, etc., in their expansion into Latin America. In addition, the Center, together with various faculties and institutions, and local university partners from Chile, Peru, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay and other Latin American countries, organized a number of international seminars focusing on key topics such as digital China and China-Latin America online education cooperation, technology transfer, China's economic development prospects, and the development of students' global competence.
Moreover, it has innovatively designed the “Exploring Latin America and the Caribbean” and “Understanding China” online courses to facilitate multilateral cooperation.
Main Activities of the Center
Latin American and Caribbean Ambassadors Convening at Tsinghua University: The event was held at Tsinghua for four consecutive years from 2021 to 2024, aiming to actively share wisdom and experience through keynote speeches and round-table dialogues, improve understanding, expand consensus, promote China-Latin America friendship and cooperation, and move forward hand in hand in the process of building a community of common destiny for mankind, so as to create a significant impact in China and in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. The fourth event was held in June 2024 with the theme of “China's Overseas Investment and the Openness and Development of Latin America and the Caribbean”. Li Luming, President of Tsinghua University, Fernando Lugris, Ambassador of Uruguay and Head of the Mission from Latin America and the Caribbean, Cai Wei, Director General of the Latin America Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, attended the event and delivered speeches. More than 30 envoys and representatives from the 17 LAC embassies and representative organizations in China participated in the event, which was reported by Xinhua News Agency, CGTN and many other important media.
Faculty and Student Practices in Latin America: The Center supported a number of faculties and departments of Tsinghua University to carry out winter and summer practice in Latin America countries, such as Chile, Brazil and The Dominican Republic. Under the guidance and support of the university leadership and the International Affairs Office, the Tsinghua University Latin America Center has been actively cooperating with the School of Economics and Management, the School of Life Sciences, the School of Medicine, the School of Architecture, the School of Safety Sciences, the Center for Global Competence Development, the Technology Transfer Office, the Office of Online Education, the Office of Global Communication and other departments and institutions, to support the students overseas practice in Latin America. During the summer of 2023, the Latin America Center supported nine student teams to practice abroad, and in December of the same year, the Center sponsored a delegation of faculty from the School of Life and the School of Medicine to visit Chile.
China-Latin America 2024 Youth Challenge to Alleviate Poverty: the first event of this program was led by Professor Chen Taotao, Director of the Tsinghua University Latin America Center, with the support and guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the Brazilian Embassy in China, the Chilean Embassy in China, the Chinese Embassy in Brazil, and the Chinese Embassy in Chile. The event brought together top universities from China, Brazil, and Chile, including professors and poverty reduction experts from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is the first activity initiated by Tsinghua University that focuses on the theme of “Poverty Reduction” and is based on “Poverty Reduction Cases and Innovative Solutions Competition + Academic Forum + Field Research”, starting from typical Latin American countries and gradually radiating to the Latin American and Caribbean region. It is committed to presenting China's achievements and experiences in poverty reduction to Latin America and the world, telling the story of China's poverty reduction to a wider range of countries, and contributing wisdom to the cause of poverty reduction in Latin America and developing countries around the world.
