The “China-Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges—2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge”, jointly launched by Tsinghua University and its Latin American partner universities, serves as a cross-national competition and exchange platform for young people from China and Latin America. Following the preliminary round evaluation, six finalist teams advanced to Santiago, Chile, to participate in the Chile Station Final. The teams further refined and presented poverty alleviation solutions in areas including oral healthcare services for migrant communities, first-mile logistics for riverside producers, mechanized freight transportation infrastructure, educational equity and teaching assistance, cultural artifact preservation and artisan livelihoods, as well as the valorization of fishery waste and bioenergy development. From August 17 to 19, 2026 (Chile time), participants took part in a series of activities, including cross-cultural exchanges, field visits, thematic seminars, mentoring sessions, and project presentations. The final day of the three-day event was held at the Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH), where the award ceremony for the winning teams also took place.
On August 20, Diario Usach, the official university media outlet of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, published an article titled “Concurso eligió a jóvenes que dieron soluciones prácticas e innovadoras para reducir la pobreza” (Competition Selected Young People Who Proposed Practical and Innovative Solutions to Reduce Poverty), highlighting the Chile Station Final of the 2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge and the project-based work carried out by participating students. The article focuses on two poverty alleviation proposals involving USACH students: One project addresses the challenges faced by açaí berry and pirarucu producers in the Amazonas region of Brazil, particularly in product storage, cold-chain logistics, and distribution channels. The team proposed the creation of floating storage hubs to improve preservation and cold-chain transportation conditions while reducing dependence on intermediaries. The second project proposes a vertical hydroponic farming system for the community of La Pintana, Chile, aiming to save residential space and water resources while training local residents to grow medicinal and edible plants, thereby supporting both household consumption and regulated commercial sales. The report also cites representatives from the Universidad de Santiago de Chile and Tsinghua University, emphasizing the positive role that international youth programs play in promoting cross-cultural exchange, technology transfer, mutual learning, and the long-term development of cooperation between Chinese and Latin American universities.
