On August 14, 2026 (local time), the Brazil Final of the “2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge” was held at UFRJ. ZHU Qingqiao, Chinese Ambassador to Brazil, delivered a video speech at the opening ceremony. YANG Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Marcos Galvão, Brazilian Ambassador to China, also delivered video speeches. João Neto, Vice President of UFRJ, and representatives from various sectors in China and Brazil attended. As a key project of the 2026 China-Brazil Cultural Year, this final focused on fields such as inclusive education, modern agriculture, green development, and artificial intelligence, attracting 143 youth students from more than 30 Brazilian universities.

In his speech, Ambassador ZHU Qingqiao pointed out that eliminating poverty and promoting sustainable development are common tasks for the international community. During President XI Jinping’s state visit to Brazil in 2024, the Poverty Alleviation Challenge was included in the list of outcomes for the heads of state meeting. After three years of cultivation, the challenge has become an important platform for exchange and cooperation among youth from China, Brazil, Peru, and Chile. On August 19, the WeChat official account of the Chinese Embassy in Brazil published the article “Ambassador ZHU Qingqiao Delivers Video Speech to the Opening Ceremony of the Brazil Final of the 2026 ‘China-Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenge — Poverty Alleviation Challenge’”, and stated that the embassy will continue to support China-Brazil educational exchange, youth engagement, and sci-tech innovation cooperation.
