About the 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge

Poverty alleviation is a common challenge for developing countries and the whole world. In 2024, the Latin America Center of Tsinghua University, the China-Latin America Management Research Center at the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University, and the Center for Global Competence Development of Tsinghua University Students, in collaboration with Latin American university partners, successfully initiated and implemented the "China-Latin America Youth Address Global Challenges – 2024 Poverty Alleviation Challenge" (hereinafter referred to as the "Poverty Alleviation Challenge") in China (Tsinghua University), Brazil and Chile. This initiative sparked a fervent wave of university-led poverty alleviation dialogues between China and Latin America.

In November of the same year, during President Xi Jinping's state visit to Brazil for the 19th G20 Leaders' Summit, Qiu Yong, Party Secretary of Tsinghua University, and the President of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, jointly signed a university cooperation agreement on the "China-Latin America Youth Address Global Challenges" project. This agreement was included in the outcome list of General Secretary Xi Jinping's visit to Brazil, emerging as a landmark project for China-Latin America win-win development led by Tsinghua University, and was hailed as the "youth power for global governance" by mainstream media across China and Latin America.

Building on the exemplary impact of the inaugural project, the 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge launched its preparation in November last year and is now well underway. It is committed to pooling the wisdom of young people from China and Latin America, and continuing to contribute to building a more inclusive and sustainable global development landscape.

The 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge has received support from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Brazil, the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Rio de Janeiro, the Embassy of Brazil in China, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Chile, and the Embassy of Chile in China.
