Day 4 of the Study Tour in China for Latin American Teachers and Students: Exchange Meeting of the Peruvian Team at the Rural Revitalization Workstation Successfully Held

About the 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge

Co-hosted by Tsinghua University, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, the University of Chile, the Universidad del Pacífico in Peru and Minera Las Bambas S.A., the event attracted the participation of more than 310 teachers and students from 27 universities and enterprises across four countries: China, Brazil, Chile and Peru. The 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge is divided into two stages: the Preliminary Competition and the Transnational Final, aiming to promote cross-cultural communication and collaboration, and inspire the innovative thinking and practical capabilities of global youth in the field of poverty alleviation.

On June 7, 2025, the Preliminary Competition of the 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge was successfully held, with Tsinghua University as the offline main venue and participants from Latin American countries competing simultaneously in a hybrid online and offline format. After a fierce competition, 12 innovative teams stood out and advanced to the Transnational Final. In August 2025, the Transnational Final of the 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge was held in Brazil and Chile successively.

In January 2026, 32 Latin American university students who advanced to the final came to China for cultural immersion activities, including face-to-face exchanges with Chinese teachers and students, visits to China's poverty alleviation bases and institutions, and Chinese cultural tours.

The 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge received support from the Chinese Embassy in Brazil, the Consulate-General of China in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Embassy in China, the Chinese Embassy in Chile, the Chilean Embassy in China and the Chinese Embassy in Peru. We sincerely thank renowned domestic and foreign enterprises for their strong support for the event, including Envision Group, CGE, Minera Las Bambas S.A., China Mobile International (Chile), Kuaishou International Business (KSIB) and Banco BOCOM BBM S.A..


On January 21, 2026 (Beijing Time), the Exchange Meeting of the Rural Revitalization Workstation of the 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge was successfully held. Attendees included Chen Taotao, Professor of School of Economics & Management, Tsinghua University, Director of the Tsinghua University Latin American Center and Director of the Research Center for China-Latin America Management Studies, SEM, Tsinghua University; Hu Yuanyuan, Project Director of the Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Workstation; Wang Yuefang, Director of China Relations Department of MMG Limited; Ran Hui, from the Health, Safety and Environment Department of MMG Limited; Hua Zhen, Translation Expert at Minera Las Bambas Copper Mine; Nifta Lau Ibarias, Research Fellow of the China and Asia-Pacific Research Center at the Universidad del Pacífico in Peru, as well as all teachers and students of the Peruvian Team. The meeting conducted in-depth discussions on core topics such as rural revitalization practices, corporate participation in poverty alleviation, and youth exchange mechanisms.

Professor Chen Taotao, Director of the Tsinghua University Latin American Center, focused on elaborating the core significance and overall planning of this study tour at the meeting. She pointed out that this study tour is an important extension of the China-Latin American Youth Responding to Global Challenges — 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge project, continuing the core logic of "mutual learning and mutual reference" of the project. With Tsinghua's poverty alleviation toolkit "5W1H+" as the theoretical support, it focuses on the actual development and poverty alleviation needs of Latin America, and builds a practical platform for in-depth dialogue between Chinese and Latin American youth. Professor Chen Taotao delivered a sharing themed Corporate Poverty Alleviation Practices: Chinese Enterprises Investing in Latin America and Win-Win Development with Host Countries. Combining different stages of China's development, she pointed out that many Chinese enterprises have seized opportunities to achieve their own sustainable development and effectively help local poverty alleviation and income increase. Professor Chen Taotao emphasized that these mature experiences derived from China's development practice provide a reference for Latin American countries to explore poverty alleviation paths in line with their local realities.

Ms. Hu Yuanyuan, Project Director of the Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Workstation, gave the participants a detailed introduction to the relevant information of the Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Project. She fully demonstrated the development process of the rural revitalization project in chronological order and clarified the future development goals. Ms. Hu Yuanyuan extended a warm welcome and high expectation to the visit of the Peruvian Team, hoping that through field visits and in-depth exchanges, team members can not only experience the practical achievements of China's rural revitalization, but also share Peru's characteristic practices in rural development, promote bilateral cooperation and common progress in relevant fields, and inject more youthful wisdom and strength into the global sustainable rural development.

After the wonderful sharings, members of the Latin American Team enthusiastically shared their thoughts and insights based on Peru's local development reality and their immersive experience in China in the past few days. At the same time, combined with Peru's practical needs in rural development and community construction, the members put forward many constructive research directions. They not only expressed the expectation of learning from China's experience to optimize Peru's local development path, but also hoped to take this exchange as an opportunity to build a long-term communication bridge between Chinese and Latin American youth in the field of rural revitalization, so that the wisdom of two-way mutual learning can take root in practice.

Wang Yuefang, Director of China Relations Department of MMG Limited, put forward earnest expectations in her conclusion. She hoped that the team members would cherish this practical opportunity, broaden their international horizons in cross-cultural collisions, improve their practical abilities through field research, and ultimately form research results with both academic value and practical significance, contributing to deepening exchanges between Chinese and Latin American youth and promoting cultural mutual learning between China and Latin America.

In accordance with the study tour arrangement, students of the Peruvian Team will go to Cili in Hunan Province to carry out field research based on the Tsinghua University Rural Revitalization Workstation. Through on-site observation and exchanges, they will deepen their understanding of China's rural revitalization and poverty alleviation practices, and expand the practical space for China-Latin America cooperation and exchanges.
