On the afternoon of October 25, 2024, Dr. Julio Fernández Techera, President of the Catholic University of Uruguay, visited the Latin America Center at Tsinghua University. He was accompanied by Ignacio Bartesaghi, Associate Professor and Director of the Institute for International Business, and Sebastián Bandera, Consul at the Uruguayan Embassy in China, among others.
The delegation was welcomed by Professor Chen Taotao, the Director of the Tsinghua Latin America Center and the China-Latin America Management Research Center, as well as a Professor of Finance at Tsinghua’s School of Economics and Management. Professor Chen extended a warm welcome to President Fernández and his colleagues, providing an overview of Tsinghua University with a special focus on the initiatives of the Latin America Center, including the “China-Latin America Youth Camp on Addressing Global Challenges – 2024 Poverty Alleviation Challenge.” She expressed his appreciation for the support given by former Uruguayan Ambassador Fernando Lugris for the "Latin American Ambassadors at Tsinghua" series and acknowledged Ignacio Bartesaghi’s contributions to the "Exploring Latin America" course.
President Fernández introduced the Catholic University of Uruguay, discussing its history, educational model, research agenda, and international exchange initiatives. Both sides exchanged views on potential student exchanges, faculty visits, and the Poverty Alleviation Challenge.
Following the meeting, the team from the Latin America Center led the delegation on a tour of the Tsinghua University campus.
