Chile's Industrialization Process and Current Development Trends

Source:       Time:2021.05.11

Introduction

It was a research project cooperated with Professor Manuel Agosin of UChile.

In the context of the financial crisis and the reversal of the trend of globalization, it is important to understand the development orientation of the host country. Through this joint projection, we interviewed both Chilean and Chinese firms as well as government officers, and conducted comparative case study, finding out some interesting inclusion. As a typical Latin American country, Chile has experienced the full process of industrialization including the pre-industrialization phase, the inward industrialization phase, the neoliberal reform phase and the export orientation phase. And it has grown into one of the most open and competitive countries in Latin America with the joint efforts of the government and foreign firms. From the development process of the Chilean industrialization, we can see that the role of foreign firms is growing and the awareness and ability that the government works in the industrialization are continuously explored and gradually mature although the government’s intervention is not continuous. Besides, the ability for government to guide the foreign firms is enhancing gradually. At present, the Chilean government mainly attracts foreign firms into those industries with domestic comparative advantage by means of cooperation and openness, and make up for market failure by itself or as a guide for foreign firms so as to promote the Chilean export and the national competitiveness. Thus, it is necessary for Chinese companies to invest in Chile to understand and comply with the local comparative advantage and policy guidance, on this basis, find the combining site between its own ability and social comprehensive development orientation in Chile and explore to realize win-win development pattern.
