On the afternoon of December 15, 2025, Peru time, the Tsinghua University Latin America Center team held an exchange with Claudia Huillca, a beneficiary of the "Las Bambas Educational Resources Program" (Programa de Recursos Educativos Las Bambas, PREB). Attendees included Chen Taotao, Professor of Finance Department of School of Economics & Management, Tsinghua University, Director of the Tsinghua University Latin America Center, and Director of Center for China-Latin America Management Studies, School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University; as well as Rong Yu, a postdoctoral researcher, and Feng Jian and Qiao Ziyi, PhD candidates from the School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University.
During the meeting, Professor Chen Taotao, Director of the Latin America Center, elaborated on the primary objectives of the discussion and expressed heartfelt gratitude to Claudia Huillca for attending the interview. Claudia Huillca shared her experience as a resident of the direct impact zone of the mining area, detailing her leapfrog personal growth facilitated by various support programs from Minera Las Bambas S.A.. She recalled the early scarcity of educational resources in the community and highlighted the key role played by PREB in providing after-school learning spaces, emotional support, and capacity development. She pointed out that her internship experience with Minera Las Bambas S.A. exposed her to broader career and educational perspectives, offering a crucial opportunity for her subsequent planning of overseas studies. Her family also benefited from educational support programs such as scholarships provided by Minera Las Bambas S.A.
Both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on the fundamental role of educational programs in the long-term development of resource-dependent communities, how corporate support can form positive interactions with individual agency, and the significance of cultivating community human capital for regional transformation. Both sides agreed that Minera Las Bambas S.A., through diversified support methods such as PREB, internship opportunities, and scholarships, has provided significant assistance to local youth in breaking through geographical limitations and achieving personal development. This community investment model centered on education and capacity building lays an important foundation for resource-dependent regions to explore sustainable future development paths.
