Exploring Latin America and the Caribbean Countries |U.S.–Latin America Relations and Their Impact on Latin America

1. Course Background

Over the past decade, economic and trade relations between China and Latin America have become increasingly close. In 2016, President Xi visited Latin America, and in May 2017, during talks with the President of Argentina, he emphasized that Latin America is a natural extension of the Belt and Road Initiative. In 2018, Tsinghua University Latin America Center was established in Santiago, Chile. The Center serves as Tsinghua University’s platform for communication and exchange in Latin America, supporting the university’s mission of cultivating global competence and promoting academic research, cultural exchange, and technological innovation cooperation with Latin American countries.

 

2. Course Introduction

In 2018, the Tsinghua University Latin America Center was established in Santiago, Chile. As Tsinghua’s key platform for engagement in Latin America, the Center supports the University’s mission of cultivating global competence and promotes academic research, cultural exchange, and technological cooperation with countries in the region.

In the Spring Semester of 2026, the Exploring Latin America and the Caribbean Countries lecture series consists of seven sessions. Chinese speakers include Professor Li Ziying from Beijing Foreign Studies University, among others. International speakers include: Flavia Zacconi from Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Paula Carvalho from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, INCT-PPED, Enrique Dussel Peters from National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Jhon Beens from Central University of Venezuela.

These scholars will deliver lectures on key topics related to Latin America’s development, governance, and global engagement.

Lecture Content

Professor Cui Shoujun from the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China will deliver a keynote lecture analyzing the development environment of Latin American countries amid changes in the current international landscape, as well as the impact of external relations on regional development.

Cui Shoujun

 

Cui Shoujun is Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China. He also serves as Director of the Institute of International Development Studies and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, and has been awarded the title of “Wu Yuzhang Scholar” at Renmin University of China.

He has been a visiting scholar under the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and the European Commission’s Marie Curie International Exchange Program. His main research areas include Chinese diplomacy, energy issues, geopolitics, and global governance. He has led and participated in numerous national- and provincial-level research projects and serves as a consultant and advisor to various international organizations, government ministries, and enterprises.
