About ECLAC (School of Latin American Development Studies)

In 2000, with the aim of sharing and promoting its work among students and researchers from all over the world, the ECLAC Division of Production, Productivity and Management, joining forces with the entire institution, created the Summer School, a training program in which more than 500 students from more than 35 countries have participated since its inception.

The Summer School has given rise to the Latin American School of Development Studies, a pluralistic space for thought that promotes discussion, reflection, and the exchange of ideas on development theories and policies. It combines the specialized contributions of ECLAC's different divisions with advances and debates at the frontiers of academic research.

The School is structured around two main axes: research and teaching. In terms of research, it also conducts and publishes studies on issues related to the development process in the region, both theoretical and empirical. In terms of teaching, the school currently offers a Program of Studies on Development Policies for Latin America and the Caribbean, a space to discuss development issues with depth and rigor, while respecting the pluralism inherent to the social sciences. During the Program, theoretical and empirical issues are addressed, with emphasis on the experience of Latin American countries.

Requirements: University degree in disciplines related to the social sciences, humanities, or economics. Preference will be given to students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program or who have recently completed a graduate degree. Fluency in English and Spanish is required, as classes are taught in both languages.

Applicants should complete the application form and ask a supervisor or person familiar with their academic background and/or work experience to send a letter of reference to the contact email address.

Program information: The program is structured in six modules: introduction to development; sustainable development; political development; economic development; social development; and development ethics. Classes will be held Monday in CEPAL’s Chilean headquarters in Av. Dag Hammarskjöld 3477, Vitacura, Santiago de Chile, through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and students may spend the rest of the day at the Hernán Santa Cruz Library to work on their research.

Tuition and course fees are waived for participants, who are responsible for their own travel, lodging and accommodation costs, as scholarships are not available. Classes, mostly in Spanish, are taught by ECLAC staff researchers and prestigious professors from various universities in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the world.
