Before we begin, I have a quick note for our students. Because of the time difference, today we will have two parts. In the first part, we will have our kickoff for the 2026 exchange program with our Latin American friends online. Basically, we will review the schedule, the rules, the awards, and so on, so that we can all have an overall picture of this program.
After the kickoff, we will have a short break, and then we will have the second half of our event, in which Professor Chen, the Director of the Latin America Center at Tsinghua University, will give a more in-depth introduction to this program. She will also give you some very valuable tips for participating. Our peers at the Tsinghua University Latin America Center will also give you some tips, and we can have a Q&A session.
After that, we will give you the gifts, as we promised. Okay. I see everyone is online now, so shall we start? Okay, let’s start. Maribel, shall we start?

Okay, hello everyone, good morning and good evening. Welcome to the kickoff of the China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — 2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge program. I am one of the moderators today, and our other moderator is Maribel Florez, who is the Director of the Global Learning Office in the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.
Thank you. Let me briefly introduce our program. This program was initiated in 2024, so this is our third year. In 2024, during President Xi’s state visit to Brazil, this program also became one of the official outcomes of that state visit. During these three years, we have witnessed an increasing number of partners, both in China and in Latin America.
This year, in 2026, we have several founding organizers as well as co-organizers. Among the founding organizers, in China we have Tsinghua University; in Brazil, the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; in Chile, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and the University of Chile; and in Peru, Universidad del Pacifico. In addition to the founding organizers, we also have co-organizers this year. In Brazil, we have the Embassy of China in Brazil and the FGV Business School in Sao Paulo, and in Peru, we also have the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
So I think I will stop here, and I will invite Maribel to lead us into the first session of the kickoff, the opening remarks. Maribel, the floor is yours.

Thank you. Professor Maria Montt, Vice President for International Affairs, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile; Professor Ana Celia Castro, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Professor Alicia Salomone, Director of International Relations at the University of Chile; Professor Cynthia Sanborn, Director of the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Universidad del Pacífico, Peru; all the distinguished guests from our sponsoring institutions, including Envision Group, CGE, and MMG/Las Bambas; all the students and faculty members from Tsinghua, Chile, Peru, and Brazil: good morning and good evening.
This is the third year of the program “China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — Poverty Alleviation Challenge.” In the previous two years, we have achieved a great deal together. In 2024, this program was included in the list of outcomes from President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Brazil.
In 2025, the Challenge program brought together more than 300 students from 27 universities across China, Brazil, Chile, and Peru. Around 100 teams registered for the Challenge, among which 39 were transnational teams. In the end, 12 teams won the contest and received awards. Twenty-four Tsinghua students and faculty members traveled to Brazil and Chile to participate in the final round in August 2025, and 36 students and faculty members from Latin America came to China in January 2026 for study visits.
Student projects covered a broad spectrum of poverty-related issues, including agriculture, mining, education, healthcare, energy, and more. In particular, many projects tried to apply AI-enabled solutions.
For these great achievements, I would like to take this chance to express my sincere thanks to all my dear university partners in Chile, Brazil, and Peru; to all the supporting embassies, including the Chinese embassies in Chile, Brazil, and Peru, as well as the Brazilian, Chilean, and Peruvian embassies in China; and to all the generous sponsoring companies.
Based on the experience of the previous two years, I would like to emphasize several key points for this year.
First of all, I would suggest that we change our focus from “poverty alleviation” to “poverty alleviation and development.” From China’s experience, even though we ended extreme poverty in 2021, we still keep working hard on development and trying to stop people from falling back into poverty. So focusing on “poverty alleviation and development” will give people more hope for a sustainable future.
Second, I want to remind our students here that we are doing a real project. I encourage our students to use your own eyes to observe the real phenomena of poverty and work on them. At the same time, this year we have a new initiative to support you. We will invite companies and institutions that are actively tackling poverty challenges in their own work to propose topics and provide mentorship for those who choose them. Additionally, we will also invite institutions with best practices from different countries to raise topics associated with their best practices. In this way, if their topics are chosen, that will help best practices be learned and transferred to other countries more easily. So please pay close attention to these suggested topics.
Last but not least, since a truly great cross-border project requires more time, energy, and effort, if you are not awarded this year, do not be disappointed. We will encourage you to rejoin the program next year. Likewise, we definitely encourage student teams who did win the contest to rejoin the Challenge program this year. We will set specific rules for this. So if you believe your project is promising, just keep working on it, and our Challenge program platform will always support you.
All my young friends here, you are very welcome to the Challenge program. I look forward to seeing you during the course. Thanks, everyone, for listening.

Well, hello everyone. Good morning and good evening in China, Peru, and Brazil — I hope I am not missing any country. Especially to the students, we are very motivated and happy to have you here, and I am also very happy to see many old friends, new friends, and future friends. It is really a pleasure for me to be able to welcome you to this Youth Challenge to alleviate poverty.
On behalf of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, I would like to thank you all for being here and express our sincere thanks to Tsinghua, and especially Professor Chen Taotao, who, with her energy, brings us together once again for such an important challenge. I would like to emphasize how welcome and how happy I am to see all the students from the different universities. By choosing to participate in this initiative, you take an important step — a step that requires commitment, openness, and the willingness to engage with complex realities. Your presence here motivates us, but it also reflects your own motivation, responsibility, and genuine interest in contributing to positive change.
Young people play a vital role in addressing poverty worldwide. You bring energy, creativity, and new perspectives. But as we know, poverty is not only an economic issue: it affects health, education, dignity, opportunity, and overall well-being. Because of this, it is central to address it in order to promote sustainable development and reduce inequality across countries and regions.
This challenge is also a valuable platform for dialogue, collaboration, and exchange. It encourages international and interdisciplinary teamwork, and it allows you to learn about different experiences and perspectives. It also strengthens cooperation between China and Latin America, even though we are 12 hours apart and separated by an ocean. It fosters mutual engagement, understanding, and shared approaches, and helps us find what we have in common as we address global challenges.
So the relationships that you will build throughout this program are equally important. The conversations you have and the connections that you create may influence your future paths — I am sure they will. And the ideas that you develop here can really become the starting point for new initiatives, new research projects, public policies, and different ways of impacting our societies locally and globally.
So your participation, students, sends a powerful message: collaboration is not only possible, but necessary. You show how this is done. You are already the young leaders from China and Latin America who work together with a sense of purpose and responsibility. At the Catolica in Santiago, we are deeply committed to educating global citizens and to supporting young people as they develop the skills, values, and leadership needed to face global challenges. We believe in dialogue, in respect, and in collaboration. And I will emphasize dialogue, respect, and collaboration as key principles when you work in teams from different backgrounds, universities, countries, and cultures.
I am confident that you will approach this challenge with creativity, dedication, and enthusiasm. I wish you great success. You will see us around, and I hope that you will soon have the opportunity to interact very closely with our students from Chile and from our university — although I can already see many of you here from different universities, and it is very nice to see all your messages, so please continue writing in the chat. So thank you very much to all of you for being here. Special thanks to Professor Chen Taotao, whose energy keeps moving us and brings us here again for a third year, pushing this project forward for our students and for the future of both our regions. Thank you very much.

Good day, distinguished colleagues, dear students, honored guests, and friends,
It is a great pleasure — and, I would say, a profound responsibility — to open this Poverty Alleviation Competition in 2026.
We meet today around an issue that is not only urgent, but foundational.
Among all the Sustainable Development Goals, the number one – No Poverty - occupies a unique place. It is the first goal not merely by order, but by its importance. Because poverty is not simply one challenge among many. Poverty is the condition that intensifies and reproduces so many of the other vulnerabilities that mark our societies.
Focusing multidimensional vulnerabilities, poverty is better understood as a condition of compounded exposure — a condition that deepens risks, limits capabilities, and reduces the capacity of individuals, families, and territories to respond to shocks. Poverty aggravates social vulnerability. It restricts access to education, health, housing, food, and dignity. It amplifies climate vulnerability. It reinforces territorial vulnerability.
Whole communities become trapped in cycles of exclusion. And it perpetuates vulnerability between different generations. Children born into poverty inherit not only material deprivation, but reduced opportunities, fragile institutions, and futures of uncertainty.
This is precisely why this Competition is so important. Its significance goes far beyond the generation of isolated ideas or specific solutions proposed.
This is not only a competition about reducing poverty. It is a space for imagining solutions capable of transforming the broader architecture of vulnerability. To alleviate poverty is to strengthen resilience and to expand human freedom. And finally, to alleviate poverty is to create the conditions for more just, inclusive, and sustainable futures.
This is why the voices gathered here today matter so deeply. The ideas that emerge from this Competition may contribute not only to local solutions, but to a broader global movement committed to reducing multidimensional vulnerabilities and advancing human development.
Let us therefore see this moment not only as a competition, but as an invitation. An invitation to imagine futures where poverty is not destiny. Where vulnerability is not permanence. And where innovation is placed at the service of human dignity.
Thank you very much.

Thank you very much, Maribel, for the introduction. I am absolutely delighted to be here with all of you. First of all, I would like to send greetings, on behalf of the authorities of the University of Chile and on my own behalf, to the authorities of Tsinghua University, and especially to our champion, Professor Chen Taotao, head of the Tsinghua University Latin America Center, who has been working so closely with us and inspiring all of us with her energy, her insightful vision, and all the purpose involved in this very important project.
I would like to say hello also to the representatives of the partner universities, the sponsor companies, and especially to our students, who have been very committed to this initiative. As Professor Chen Taotao mentioned before, this is not just a project. This is a real project, trying to find real solutions to one of the most important challenges at the global level, which is Goal No. 1 for sustainable development: No Poverty.
Moreover, as pointed by my colleagues Maria Montt and Professor Ana Celia Castro, poverty is not just one goal; it is very much linked to other challenges, such as no hunger, gender equality, life on land and below water, quality education, and a culture of peace. For this reason, to successfully work on poverty alleviation, we need to think integrally, incorporating all the global challenges that also contribute to poverty alleviation. In this sense, I also welcome the idea posed by Professor Chen Taotao of shifting the perspective from poverty alleviation to development. It is indeed a very good addition.
At the University of Chile, we are very much engaged with this project as it reflects our institutional commitment to the 2030 Agenda, and to multilateral cooperation, including cooperation between Latin America and China. Last January, we had the pleasure of sending a group of our students to China. It was a magnificent experience for them, and we are still hearing about the impact of that it had in their lives. It is frankly very rewarding to see the real impact of this kind of initiative.
To conclude this words, I would like to emphasize the significant impact that the programme on poverty alleviation has had on the participating students, both for their academic development and for the breadth of their awareness of global challenges. Thus, I must say that there is great enthusiasm within the University of Chile for this new edition of programme. We are confident that it will continue to strengthen the professional and scientific capacities of our students, and it will also consolidate the links of friendship and cooperation that they have been developing throughout these years. We have great confidence and trust in our students and in the possibilities that this kind of project brings to our countries and to our young people.

Thank you, Maribel, and good morning to our friends in China, and good evening to our friends in Chile, Brazil, and Peru. It is really a pleasure to join you again for the China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — 2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge.
I am sending a warm greeting from our university president, Dr. Martha Chavez, and all of our authorities, who are very excited to be back again this year. I would like to begin by expressing our sincere appreciation to Tsinghua University, the organizing team, and Professor Chen Taotao. The word “energy” keeps being repeated for Professor Chen Taotao, but it is true. She motivates all of us and serves as an amazing role model and driving force for this initiative.
I would also like to thank the sponsors. We were extremely thankful to MMG Las Bambas and other companies that enabled our students to travel last year, and we thank them again for supporting this wonderful initiative. We are especially grateful and delighted to work with colleagues and exchange with students in Chile and Brazil, as well as in China, and I think that the network being formed here goes well beyond a once-a-year program. We really are making friends and learning from each other constantly.
At the Universidad del Pacífico, it is particularly meaningful for us to be involved in this initiative. We are pleased to continue supporting a space that fosters collaboration and innovation. Our students last year learned a tremendous amount. Many of the students who participated last year had never traveled outside Peru, certainly had never traveled to China, and certainly knew very little about a country that is our major trading partner and also a major investor in our country. Their participation made a big difference in their lives and in their development as future professionals.
Poverty remains one of the most complex and persistent challenges we all share, as has been said, and I completely agree with Professor Chen Taotao, Ana Celia, and Maria that it is not just poverty in the sense of income or deprivation of basic needs. There are really profound things that need to be changed in our society. And it is especially meaningful now, in a context of so much global violence, tension, competition, and hostility, that our young people are able to look beyond that and work together to think about how to address these challenges as future leaders of each of our countries.
I would encourage all of the students who are interested to participate actively, to work together across borders, to form teams not only in their own country but also with friends in other countries, and to participate with a great deal of apertura — openness to learning. And as Ana Celia very well said, this is not really about competition; it is about collaboration and learning from each other.
So again, we are very pleased to be part of this initiative. We look forward to seeing how it continues to grow this year, with new partners and new friends in each of the countries involved. Thank you again for having us.

Okay, it is a great pleasure to be here again. I am very pleased to see so many friends once more. So, good morning and good evening, everyone, and also to my friends in China, Brazil, Peru, and Chile. I am Fang Wei from CGE Group in Chile. It is a great pleasure to speak at this important session.
As an energy company with broad international experience, CGE has been exploring how infrastructure and public services can support more inclusive and sustainable growth. Today, we gather here to explore how innovative solutions can help reduce poverty. This challenge remains significant, but I firmly believe that through this competition, we can bring together diverse perspectives and identify practical and actionable solutions.
In our own experience, whether expanding electricity access in remote areas or supporting the integration of renewable energy, we have learned that poverty is not only about income, but also about equal access to opportunity. This is exactly why coordination among companies, governments, and young people is so critical.
This competition offers a valuable platform for young people from different countries to share insights, exchange experience, and propose innovative and meaningful solutions. We are also encouraged to see more young people engage with such topics as energy transition, digital development, and social equity, and approach this challenge in cross-cutting ways. We believe that this fresh perspective will bring more ways to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
In the upcoming season, we are looking forward to your experimentation. Along the way, I hope your ideas will go beyond the proposal stage and eventually translate into real-world practice. At CGE Group, we are also looking forward to engaging with more young talent and working together toward a more inclusive and sustainable future. Let us work together to reduce poverty and build a better future. Thank you, and I wish great success to this edition.

Thank you. Good evening, everyone — distinguished organizers from Tsinghua University, dear participants and colleagues. It is a great honor for me to represent Las Bambas and participate in this important initiative, the China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — Poverty Alleviation Challenge.
On behalf of Las Bambas, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to Tsinghua University for creating this valuable platform, which brings together young leaders from different countries to exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions for sustainable development.
Las Bambas is one of the largest copper mines in Peru and a key contributor to regional and national development. However, beyond our operational role, we believe that responsible mining must create shared value for local communities. For us, poverty reduction is not only a social commitment, but also an essential component of sustainable development.
At Las Bambas, we promote this vision through our community development approach, known as Corazón de Las Bambas. This model focuses on strengthening local capacities, promoting economic diversification, improving access to education and healthcare, and fostering long-term partnerships with communities and local authorities. Through this integrated approach, we aim to support inclusive growth and improve quality of life in our areas of influence.
We have implemented various initiatives aligned with these objectives. These include supporting local agricultural development, strengthening small businesses, promoting education programs for youth, and investing in infrastructure that benefits rural communities. We also work closely with stakeholders to ensure that development initiatives respond to real community needs and contribute to sustainable livelihoods.
We strongly believe that young people play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. Your ideas, innovation, and cross-cultural collaboration are essential to building more inclusive and resilient societies. Programs like this one help bridge knowledge and experience between regions and inspire practical solutions that can be implemented on the ground.
Las Bambas is proud to support this initiative and to contribute to strengthening cooperation between China and Latin America. We look forward to continuing to work together with academic institutions, governments, communities, and young leaders to promote sustainable development and shared prosperity. Thank you very much, and I wish you all a successful and inspiring program.
