Tsinghua University Co-organizes “China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge” Study Tour for Latin American Youth in China

Tsinghua University News, February 15 – From January 18 to 24, the “China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — 2025 Poverty Alleviation Challenge” study tour for Latin American youth in China was successfully held. Approximately 40 Latin American faculty members and students from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, University of Chile, University of the Pacific (Peru), and Minmetals Las Bambas Peru joined Tsinghua University faculty and students for an 8-day academic exchange program.

Yang Bin, Vice Chairman of the University Council of Tsinghua University, delivered a video address. He noted that the Poverty Alleviation Challenge is a pioneering initiative. Its inaugural edition was successfully held in 2024 and was recognized as one of the key outcomes of the bilateral visit during President Xi Jinping’s trip to Brazil. The 2025 Beijing Declaration of the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Forum of China–Latin America Cooperation further calls for deepening cooperation and exchanges in poverty reduction, providing greater confidence for expanding the project’s influence across Latin America and globally.

The study tour consisted of two phases: intensive academic activities in Beijing and grassroots field trips outside the capital. During the Beijing phase, participants visited institutions, engaged in cultural exchanges, and studied at the Tsinghua University Institute for Accessibility Development. The delegation also visited Envision Group, Minmetals Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd., China ENFI Engineering Co., Ltd., and State Grid International Development Co., Ltd., gaining in-depth insights into China’s experience in green energy, infrastructure development, and international business operations.

Subsequently, the delegation split into teams to conduct grassroots research across China. In Nanjian, Yunnan, the Brazilian team investigated the tea and coffee industry, digital healthcare, and clean energy applications. In Cili, Hunan, the Peruvian team examined the development of characteristic industrial chains and ecological governance in mining areas. In Gaochun, Jiangsu, the Chilean team studied intangible cultural heritage inheritance, rural planning, and the exploration of digital economy-enabled rural development.

Chinese and Chilean Faculty and Students Learn to Make Feather Fans in Gaochun

Chen Taotao, Professor at the School of Economics and Management, Director of the Tsinghua University Latin American Center, and Director of the Research Center for China–Latin America Management Studies, SEM, Tsinghua University, pointed out that through cross-cultural exchanges and collaboration, Chinese and Latin American youth have deepened their understanding of poverty alleviation issues, transforming poverty alleviation solutions from conceptual ideas into actionable practical paths.

This study tour was jointly organized by the Tsinghua University Latin American Center, the Global Competence Development Center for Students, and the Rural Revitalization Workstation, co-hosted by participating institutions, and supported by the Chinese embassies in Latin American countries. Since its launch in 2024, the Poverty Alleviation Challenge has grown into a landmark project of Tsinghua University for promoting youth exchanges and poverty reduction cooperation between China and Latin America.
