On April 10, 2025 (Beijing time), the team of Tsinghua University Latin America Center (Tsinghua LAC) warmly welcomed Professor Luis Leopold, Administrative Vice-Rector of the University of the Republic of Uruguay and professor in the Department of Psychology, along with Sebastián Bandera, Consul at the Embassy of Uruguay in China, and their delegation.
During the meeting, the Center’s team provided a comprehensive overview of the development of Tsinghua University and Tsinghua Latin America Center, as well as the international master’s and doctoral programs targeted at Latin America. Special emphasis was placed on the initiative "2025 China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges", and an invitation was extended to universities in Uruguay and the broader region to encourage the young talents to take part in this exchange.
Professor Leopold expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and gave a brief introduction to the University of the Republic of Uruguay. He expressed that this year they would focus on studying in depth the experiences of poverty alleviation initiative, with the goal of mobilizing more Uruguayan faculty and students to participate in the program next year, thereby fostering stronger collaboration between Chinese and Latin American youth on global issues.
The University of the Republic of Uruguay (Universidad de la República, or Udelar) is the country’s leading institution for higher education and research, and its only comprehensive public university. Founded in 1849 and based in the capital city of Montevideo, it currently comprises 17 faculties and enrolls more than 80,000 students, making it not only the oldest public university in Uruguay but also one of the largest in Latin America in terms of student enrollment.
