Tsinghua "iCulture" Series of Activities of Latin American Classic Film Appreciation

From January 29th to February 5th, 2021,Beijing time, Tsinghua Latin America Center and Center for Global Competence Development successfully held "Picturing Latin America: Latin American Classic Films Appreciation" during the winter vacation. First of all, students watched Argentine film "Motorbike Diary" and Mexican film "The Beginning of Time",then discussed with the professors online.

For this event, the Center specially invited Professor Li Ziying, vice director of Academy of Regional and Global Governance,vice director of faculty ofHispanic and Portuguese Studies, Beijing Foreign Studies University, and Yang Bin, Ph.D. who graduated from the Media Arts and Culture Research Center of Communication University of China, to participate as speakers. They analyzed the two films from the perspective of the cultural background of Argentina and Mexico and the artistic techniques of filming, so that the students could have a deeper understanding of the multiculturalism of Latin American countries.

About the Argentine film "Motor Diary", Dr.Yang Bin analyzed it from the perspective of film shooting art, shared the audio-visual experience of Latin American style and the cultural symptoms of Latin American society with the students. Prof. Li Ziying explained the legendary life of the protagonist Guevara in detail, meanwhile she introduced the history, economy and culture of Argentina in the 1950s when the film was produced, and interpreted the hero's tenacious will when he joined the revolution.

About the Mexican film "The Beginning of Time", Dr.Yang Bin analyzed its audio-visual language, shot scheduling, rich details,and vivid characters. Prof.Li Ziying introduced to the students the economic conditions of Mexico and the region's economic crisis during the film's production, saying that this is an excellent film which can reflect the essence of Mexican culture such es Mayan civilization and Aztec civilization.

The two events received enthusiastic responses.Prof. Chen Taotao, Director of the Latin America Center, said that the most important topic of Tsinghua University's global strategy is how to cultivate talents with global competence. According to her personal experience,she feels thatto develop theglobal competencewemust first have global perception. Only if we have the ability to perceive the world, then we can truly embrace the world with passion from the heart. More awareness of multiculturalism will lead to greater understanding of the world and the capacity for tolerance. This even twill start our journey of perception, allowing us to perceive Latin America, experience multiculturalism, and understand the rest of the world.
