In today’s episode of Economic Perspective, we explore how China and Latin America have joined efforts in projects that promote economic growth and poverty alleviation. These stories reflect the spirit of cooperation, deep friendship, and mutual commitment between the two sides in addressing common social challenges.
In this episode, we spoke with Zhao Jing, CEO of Minera Las Bambas S.A., and connected with Gabriel Salgado, CGTN commentator and Master of International Relations from the University of International Business and Economics, at the Beijing studio.
Zhao Jing noted that Minera Las Bambas S.A.highly values its participation in the China-Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges – Poverty Alleviation Camp, an initiative that strongly advances youth empowerment and sustainable development. When formulating its 2026–2030 social investment plan, the company will include high-potential youth ideas as one of the alternative directions for future investment, turning talent and wisdom into tangible outcomes. In addition, Las Bambas ensures that vulnerable households and small enterprises receive substantial support through direct benefits, improved agricultural and livestock varieties, training for micro-enterprises, and the “Emprende” (Entrepreneur) Network that facilitates the sharing of resources and experience.
Gabriel Salgado stated that the most impressive aspect of China’s poverty alleviation practice is that it has integrated poverty reduction into state policy with long-term continuity and a collaborative mechanism involving the government, private sector, universities, and communities. He recalled that since the reform and opening-up, China has lifted more than 850 million people out of poverty and eradicated extreme poverty in 2020. He also praised the Tsinghua University Poverty Alleviation Camp as a bridge of knowledge and action between China and Latin America, playing a key role in advancing effective poverty alleviation strategies.
