Abstract:In 1970, China established diplomatic relations with Chile and since then the two countries have been maintaining friendly exchanges and their economic and trade relations have been increasingly enhanced. In 2016, the bilateral relations were upgraded to a comprehensive strategic partnership, which has pushed the development of Sino-Chilean relations to a new level. Nevertheless, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Chile, the Covid-19 pandemic and the escalation of China-U.S. dispute and other uncertainties in the world are all posing potential challenges for the future relationship between China and Chile. In this context, the future development of Sino-Chilean relations is worth pondering over. In this chapter, we firstly reviewed the inherent logics of Sino-Chilean friendship in the past 50 years, and then we identified the essence of the two major current challenges, Covid-19 pandemic and the China-U.S. dispute. Based on this, we put forward constructive ideas on strategic cooperation to ensure the sustainable development of Sino-Chilean relations in the complex international situation.
