Good day once again, distinguished colleagues, dear students, honored guests, and friends, It is a great honor to be with you again today.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of opening the launch ceremony of this Poverty Alleviation Competition, and in my remarks, I emphasized two central points. First, the centrality of poverty reduction as the Sustainable Development Goal that is deeply connected to all the others. And second, the fundamental importance of combating poverty as a way of reducing the multiple vulnerabilities that affect individuals, communities, territories, and future generations.
Today, I would like to add one further reflection. We are now approaching the end of the period for which the Sustainable Development Goals were originally conceived — the horizon of 2030. This moment invites us not only to assess what has been achieved, but also to reflect on what remains unfinished.
The SDGs were never meant to be a closed agenda. They are, and must continue to be, a permanent source of inspiration. A source of ethical orientation. A source of public imagination. And a source of collective action. Their meaning goes far beyond measurable targets. They embody a vision of development centered on social justice, environmental sustainability, and shared futures.
In this sense, the fight against poverty is not only about reducing deprivation in the present. It is about expanding capacities, enhancing freedom, and strengthening dignity.
It is about creating the conditions under which people can imagine and build better futures for themselves and for their communities: our desirable tomorrows.
This is precisely why this Competition is so important. It is not only a space for ideas. It is a space for expanding the collective capacity to deal with poverty in all its dimensions, widening the horizon of freedom. As we approach 2030, let us remember that the Sustainable Development Goals are not simply a deadline. They are a living commitment, to people, to the planet, and to human dignity.
The fight against poverty is, ultimately, the fight for human flourishing and that future begins with the ideas we dare to put forward today.
Thank you very much.

Thank you, Ms. Paula. I am Chen Mo from the Chinese Embassy in Brazil. It is a great honor to join you. Distinguished scholars and professors, dear students and friends, it is a great pleasure for me to join the Brazil session of the 2026 Poverty Alleviation Challenge program. I am especially pleased to see the strong interest from students in Brazil, especially from many universities.
The Poverty Alleviation Challenge offers a valuable opportunity for students from China and Latin America to work together on real-world development issues. Over the past year, more than 300 teachers and students from 27 universities have participated in this program, forming international teams and developing innovative ideas to address poverty-related challenges.
I think for students this is not only a competition, but also a chance to learn from different cultures, exchange perspectives, and gain hands-on experience in addressing global development challenges. I warmly encourage all students who are interested to take part in this initiative, share your ideas, and collaborate with peers from different countries.
The Chinese Embassy in Brazil will continue to support exchanges and cooperation between universities in China and Latin America, creating more opportunities for young people to learn, innovate, and grow together. I wish today’s session great success, and I look forward to seeing your creative ideas in the competition. I hope many of you will join us in this exciting journey. Thank you so much.

Thank you, Paula. Professor Ana Celia Castro, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro; Ms. Chen Mo, Education Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Brazil; Professor Ligia Maura Costa, Director of the Center for Ethics, Transparency, Integrity and Compliance Studies at FGV EAESP; Prof. Osvaldo Guzman, Deputy Director of the International Affairs Office of the University of Chile; Professor Cynthia Sanborn, Director of the Center for China and Asia-Pacific Studies at Universidad del Pacífico, Peru; all the students and faculty members from Brazil; and my PhD team and colleagues from Tsinghua University—good morning and good evening.
This is the third year of the program “China–Latin America Youth Responding to Global Challenges — Poverty Alleviation Challenge.” In the previous two years, we have achieved a great deal together. I would like to mention that the year before last, this program was included in the list of outcomes of President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Brazil.
Also, last year the program attracted more than 300 students. Thanks, Ms. Chen—you have already mentioned this, but I still want to emphasize this great number. The Challenge brought together more than 300 students from 27 universities across China, Brazil, Chile, and Peru. Around 100 teams registered, among which 39 were transnational teams. In the end, 12 teams won the competition and received awards. Because of that, 24 Tsinghua students and faculty members traveled to Brazil and Chile to participate in the final round of the competition last August. Then, 36 students and faculty members from Latin American countries came to China this January for a study visit.
Our student projects covered a very broad spectrum of poverty-related issues, including agriculture, mining, education, healthcare, energy, and so on. Many projects in particular tried to apply AI-enabled solutions, which was wonderful.
For these great achievements, I would like to take this chance to express my sincere thanks to all my dear university - partners in Brazil, Chile and Peru; to all the supporting Embassies, especially for Chinese Embassy in Brazil; The Consulate General of China in Rio de Janeiro, and Brazilian Embassy in China. My sincere thanks also go to all the generous sponsoring companies; to all the professionals and institutions who provided mentorship to our student teams and to every friend who helped us last year!
This year, as all of you have probably noticed, is the Culture Year for Brazil and China. I am very happy about, and deeply appreciate, the strong support from the Chinese Embassy in Brazil, which has joined forces with us as one of the key organizers. Thank you, Counselor Chen Mo.
Based on the experience of the previous two years, I would like to emphasize several key points for this year. First of all, I would suggest that we expand our focus from poverty alleviation to poverty alleviation and development. From China’s experience, even though we ended extreme poverty back in 2021, we still keep working on development, trying to stop people from falling back into poverty. So focusing on poverty alleviation and development will give people more hope for a sustainable future.
Second, I would like to remind our students that we are doing a real project here. I highly encourage you to use your own eyes to observe real poverty phenomena and work on them. At the same time, this year we have a new initiative to support you: we will invite companies and institutions that are actively tackling poverty challenges in their own work to propose topics and provide mentorship for the teams that choose those topics. In addition, we are also trying to invite institutions with best practices from different countries to raise topics for you. In this way, if their topics are selected by our student teams, that will help best practices be learned and transferred to other countries more easily. So please pay attention to those suggested topics.
Last but not least, a truly great cross-border project really requires more time, more energy, and more effort. So if you are not an award winner this year, please do not be disappointed. We will encourage you to rejoin the program next year. The same goes for student teams that did win the competition last year: we definitely encourage you to rejoin the Challenge this year. We have set a specific rule for this; I will not go into details here, but later you will learn about it. So, if you believe your project is promising, just keep working on it. Our Challenge platform will always, always support you.
So, all my young friends here, you are very welcome to this year’s Challenge Program. I look forward to seeing you during the course. Thanks, everyone, for listening.

Director, Center for Ethics, Transparency, Integrity and Compliance Studies (FGVethics), FGV EAESP; Professor, Department of Social and Legal Foundations, FGV EAESP
English (lightly edited transcript)
Good morning, everyone. It is really a pleasure to be here representing FGV EAESP, which is one of the oldest business schools in Brazil and one of the most traditional and leading institutions when we think about management education in Brazil.
This initiative has the support of FGVethics, which is our research center on ethics, transparency, integrity, and compliance. I am truly honored to participate in the Poverty Alleviation Challenge. It is going to be our first time in this initiative, which is led by Tsinghua University and by my dear professor and friend, Taotao Chen. Thank you so much for the invitation.
It is also carried out in collaboration with outstanding partner institutions, such as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, and Universidad del Pacífico in Peru.
At FGV EAESP, we believe that business education must go beyond technical excellence. It must also prepare leaders to understand their role in addressing society’s most pressing challenges. Poverty alleviation is one of them.
This collaboration reflects something very important: poverty is a global challenge. That is why this program, this challenge, has to be global, and it requires global solutions built through cooperation across countries, institutions, and cultures.
For business school students, engaging with poverty alleviation is not optional at all. It is essential. Why? Because the decisions they will make as future business leaders will shape not only markets, but societies. Understanding inequalities, designing sustainable solutions, and integrating ethics and integrity into business models are no longer peripheral topics. They are central to responsible leadership today.
If we want better companies, better societies, and a better world, we need better leaders—and, in our case, better business leaders. And if we want better leaders, we must expose them early to real-world challenges such as poverty. That is why this initiative really matters, because it connects knowledge with purpose, and education with impact.
Thank you very much for the invitation, Taotao, once again. Xie xie. Zai jian.

It is a pleasure to welcome you this morning to the China–LATAM Youth Challenge to Alleviate Poverty. My name is Maribel Florez, and I am Director of Global Learning at the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile.
First of all, I would like to congratulate you all for taking the first step and being here today. Your presence makes a difference. We know that taking part in this kind of activity not only requires an additional effort, but also quite a bit of patience and bravery. It is not something most people do on a daily basis. It is special. Extraordinary. And you are ready to make the most of it.
I encourage you to consider reaching out and working with students from different areas and different disciplines, and forming international teams in which each of you really learns something new and meaningful from everyone else.
Then, as you progress and work on your projects, ask yourselves: where can what I learn here really be transferable in the future? How can we adapt ideas in ways that respect the social, cultural, and institutional realities of our countries? And ultimately, how can we contribute concretely and ethically to reducing inequality?
The relationships you build during this program will matter. The conversations you have, both formal and informal, may shape your thinking for years to come. I hope you make friends along the way that you will also cherish for years to come. The ideas you develop here can even become the seeds of future initiatives, research, or changes in the way public service works in this part of the world.
At a time when the world often feels fragmented, your participation in this program sends a powerful message: your collaboration across continents is not only possible, but necessary. Young leaders from Latin America and China can work together to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. I wish you huge success, and I hope you will soon have a chance to meet and interact with our students from Chile. Take care and have a wonderful kickoff. Ciao.

It is really a pleasure to join you again for the China–Latin America 2026 Challenge. I would like to begin by expressing our sincere appreciation to Tsinghua University, the organizing team, and Professor Chen Taotao. The word “energy” keeps being repeated for Professor Chen Taotao, but it is true: she motivates all of us as an amazing role model and driving force behind this initiative.
I would also like to thank the sponsors. We were extremely thankful to MMG Las Bambas and other companies that enabled our students last year to travel, and we thank them again for supporting this wonderful initiative.
We are especially grateful and delighted to work with colleagues and exchange with students in Chile and Brazil, as well as in China, and I think the network that is being formed here is something that goes well beyond a once-a-year program. We are really making friends and learning from each other constantly.
At Universidad del Pacífico, it is particularly meaningful for us to be involved in this initiative. We are pleased to continue supporting a space that fosters collaboration and innovation.
Our students last year learned a tremendous amount. Many of the students who participated last year had never traveled outside Peru, had certainly never traveled to China, and knew very little about the country that is our major trading partner and a major investor in our country. Their participation made a big difference in their lives and in their roles as future professionals.
Poverty remains one of the most complex and persistent challenges we all share, as has been said, and I completely agree with Professor Chen Taotao, Ana Cecilia, and Maria that it is not just poverty in the sense of income or deprivation of basic needs. There are really profound things that need to be changed in our society.
It is especially hard now, in a context of such global violence and tension and competition and hostility, yet our young people are able to look beyond that and work together to think about how to address these challenges as future leaders of each of our countries.
I would encourage all students who are interested to participate actively, to work together across borders, to form teams not only in their own country but with friends in other countries, and to participate with a great deal of apertura—openness to learning.
And as Ana Cecilia very well said, this is not really about competition; it is about collaboration and learning from each other. So again, we are very pleased to be part of this initiative. We look forward to seeing how it continues to grow this year, with new partners and new friends in each of the countries involved. Thank you again for having us.
