Prof. Chen Taotao, Director of Tsinghua University Latin America Center, gives keynote speech at 10th Annual Meeting of China-Chile Business Council

The 10th Annual Meeting of China-Chile Business Council took place on the afternoon of October 16, 2023. With the theme of "Prospects for China-Chile Business Cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative", the event delved into strategic planning for bilateral trade and investment cooperation, future prospects and opportunities in both countries' economic development, as well as the influence of bilateral trade and investment cooperation in the agriculture, energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors, and the potential for commercial and technological collaboration opportunities in the field of sustainable development. Gabriel Boric, President of the Republic of Chile, made an appearance and delivered a keynote speech.

In addition, at the opening ceremony, speeches were given by Guo Tingting, Vice Minister of Commerce of China, Ma Xiuhong, President of the China Council for International Investment Promotion, Rosario Navarro, President of the Confederation of Chilean Industry, Guo Wenqing, Chinese Chairman of the China-Chile Bilateral Business Council and President of China Minmetals Corporation, and Francisco Silva, President of the China-Chile Bilateral Business Council and former Chairman of the Board of Banco Security.

During the keynote speech session, Nicolás Grau, Chile’s Minister of Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, and Zhang Yansheng, Chief Research Fellow with the China Center for International Economic Exchanges, respectively delivered speeches discussing the prospects and challenges of the Chilean and Chinese economies.

During the expert panel, Fernando Reyes Matta, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies on China at Chile’s Andrés Bello University and former Chilean Ambassador to China, Qi Xin, Director of Department of Belt and Road Economic and Trade Cooperation at the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, MOC, and Chen Taotao, Director of Tsinghua University Latin America Center, provided insights into the potential for development cooperation between China and Chile surrounding topics such as business cooperation between the two countries under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and the collaborative and mutual beneficial development of investment cooperation between enterprises from both countries.

Prof. Chen Taotao delivered a keynote speech titled “China-Chile Business Investment Cooperation and Win-Win Development”. From the perspectives of complementary capabilities between Chinese and Chilean enterprises, effective government actions, and the interaction among government, industry, and academia, she discussed the objective basis for win-win cooperation between the two countries, the government’s support in facilitating cooperative efforts, and the collaborative framework for shared growth. Her speech resonated with the audience and her viewpoints were cited during the roundtable discussion.

Furthermore, the forum included a dedicated roundtable discussion session. Moderated by Liu Zuozhang, Executive Vice President of the China Council for International Investment Promotion, a dialogue took place among Chinese and Chilean panelists, including Wei Jiaming, General Manager of China ENFI Engineering Co. Ltd., Rodrigo Bravo, Managing Director at Antofagasta Minerals [Shanghai] Co., Ltd., Xia Juncheng, President of Tianqi Lithium Corporation, Rolando Medeiros, CEO of ME Elecmetal, Chen Shaopeng, Chairman of Joyvio Group, and Recaredo Ossa, Director of International Business at the National Association of Agriculture of Chile. They discussed topics such as the impact of climate change on the agricultural, energy, and mining sectors of China and Chile, as well as the business and technological cooperation opportunities for enterprises from both countries in sustainable development.


China-Chile Bilateral Business Council

With active initiative and promotion from both governments, the China-Chile Bilateral Business Council (CBBC) is a bilateral mechanism for dialogue and cooperation established by entrepreneurs from China and Chile who are interested in strengthening cooperation on May 30, 2005. It is comprised of a Chinese council and a Chilean council. With its establishment, the CBBC has fully leveraged its platform role and garnered significant attention and unanimous recognition from the governments of both countries.
