Tsinghua University and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile held "Technology Transfer Meetup" online

On June 23 and 24, 2021, Beijing time, Tsinghua University and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (UC for short) held an event online about "Technology Transfer ".

Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, and Zeng Rong, Vice President of Tsinghua University attended this two-day event and delivered address. Niu Qingbao, Ambassador of China in Chile, Luis Schmidt, Ambassador of Chile in China, Pedro Bouchon, Vice President for Research of UC, Lilian Ferrer, Vice President for International Affairs of UC, and Fernando Hentzschel, Head of Technological Capabilities at CORFO, were invited to the event and to give address respectively.

Yang Bin addressed online

Yang Bin said that the friendship between Tsinghua and UC spanned over 15 years, since 2006 a student exchange program was carried out by two universities. After the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, the two universities deepened cooperation in medicine and public health. The vice president believes that the two universities both shoulder the responsibility of promoting innovation and leading national development in their own countries. Technology transfer will become another area for China, Chile and other Latin American countries to achieve mutual learning and win-win cooperation. Finally, Yang Bin expressed his hope that Tsinghua University Latin America Center, Tsinghua Office of Technology Transfer, XIN Center and UC Innovation Centercontinue to work side by side,and engage the academia, governments and businesses of the two nations and other Latin American countries.

“In this way, we can build an exchange platform that bridges the government, the industry and academia, and carve out a practical path for technology transfer.Our countries can surely benefit from this mutual exchange and learning experience which will further boost our shared development”, said Yang Bin.

Zeng Rong addressed online

Zeng Rong stated that serving the society is an essential function of universities.As a part of the supporting system,Tsinghua University established the Office of Technology Transfer in 2014.In recent years, Tsinghua has made great strides in STEM research, many of which was witnessed by the entire world. More than 500 technologies have already been deployed in practical application in energy, information, healthcare, new materials, intelligent manufacturing, and recycling, which is a dynamic testament to Tsinghua’s active service for practical social and economic development. Zeng Rong said that Tsinghua University and UChave a lot in common.UC Innovation Center is a pioneering institution in Chile and in Latin America. Now Tsinghua and UChave joined hands to explore the implementation of international technology transfer. This is a new chapter in the partnerships between two institutions.Finally, he wished two universities good results in international technology transfer.

As a kick-off meeting to explore the cooperation mode and landing mechanism of technology transfer between China and Chile, China and Latin America, this event set up two-days different themes. The first day’s activity focused on Chinese experience in technology transfer. Chen Jin, Director of Research Center for Technological Innovation, Tsinghua University, and Wang Yan, Director of Office of Tech transfer of Tsinghua University, gave comprehensive introductions about China and Tsinghua's policies, models and experiences in the field of technology transfer. Lin Borong, Associate Dean of the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University showed the successful cases of Tsinghua University in green buildings. On the second day, the event focused on the opportunities for tech-adoption in Chile. Álvaro González, Director of the Center for Research and Innovation, Concha y Toro, in his keynote speech he gave an outlook on tech-based innovation opportunities in Chile. Alexis Kalergis, a Biochemist, Director of millennium institute on Immunology and Immunotherapy, shared the experience about collaborative tech transfer on Sinovac vaccine with China. Finally, ThyroidPrint and Training Competence, the Chilean companies, broughthealth tech showcase which allowed us a deep dive into tech. transfer from UC.

This video conference was jointly organized by Tsinghua University Latin America Center, Office of Technology Transfer of Tsinghua University, XIN Center of Tsinghua University, and the UC Innovation Center. About 300 representatives from government agencies, universities, industry organizations and enterprises from China, Chile and other countries in Latin America who are interested in the field of technology transfer participated in this event.
